Born to German-Jewish parents who had immigrated to Britain at the beginning of the 20th century, Winton assisted in the rescue of 669 children from Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War. On a brief visit to Czechoslovakia, he helped compile a list of children in danger and, returning to Britain, he worked to fulfill the legal requirements of bringing the children to Britain and finding homes and sponsors for them. This operation was later known as the Czech (German for 'children's transport'). His humanitarian accomplishments remained unknown and unnoticed by the world for nearly 50 years until 1988 when he was invited to the BBC television programme That's Life!, where he was reunited with dozens of the children he had helped come to Britain and was introduced to many of their children and grandchildren. The British press celebrated him and dubbed him the \"British Schindler\". In 2003, Winton was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for \"services to humanity, in saving Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia\". In 2014, he was awarded the highest honour of the Czech Republic, the Order of the White Lion (1st class), by Czech President Milo\u0161 Zeman. Winton died in 2015, aged 106.","birth_date":"1909-05-19","birth_place":"Hampstead","birth_place_coordinates":{"latitude":51.5541,"longitude":-0.1744},"birth_place_wikidata_id":"Q25610","birth_place_wikidata_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25610","canonical_name":"Nicholas Winton","canonical_url":"https://zh-cn.instaget.online/people/de219e220c97b77d5cfb213b","citizenships":["United Kingdom","United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland"],"death_date":"2015-07-01","description":"British stockbroker who saved 669 Jewish children during 1938\u201339 (1909\u20132015)","external_ids":{"imdb":{"id":"nm1051211","url":"https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1051211/"},"isni":{"id":"0000000114531134","url":"https://isni.org/isni/0000000114531134"},"loc":{"id":"n2001088349","url":"https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001088349.html"},"viaf":{"id":"98307894","url":"https://viaf.org/viaf/98307894/"}},"full_name":"Nicholas Winton","height_cm":null,"names":{"aliases":[],"birth":[{"language":"en","source_property":"P1477","value":"Nicholas George Wertheim"}],"native":[{"language":"en","source_property":"P1559","value":"Nicholas Winton"}],"official":[]},"native_name":null,"notable_works":[],"occupations":["business broker","banker","philanthropist","military personnel","resistance fighter","humanitarian"],"official_websites":["https://www.nicholaswinton.com/"],"photo":null,"profile_url":"https://zh-cn.instaget.online/people/de219e220c97b77d5cfb213b","provenance":{"catalog":"wikidata_wikipedia","fetched_at":"2026-08-29T07:11:30Z","social_archives_included":false,"source_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q460431"},"public_hash":"de219e220c97b77d5cfb213b","schema_version":"1.1","socials":{},"tags":[{"key":"category:business-and-finance","label":"Business and finance","type":"category"},{"key":"occupation:business broker","label":"business broker","type":"occupation"},{"key":"occupation:banker","label":"banker","type":"occupation"},{"key":"occupation:philanthropist","label":"philanthropist","type":"occupation"},{"key":"occupation:military personnel","label":"military personnel","type":"occupation"},{"key":"occupation:resistance fighter","label":"resistance fighter","type":"occupation"},{"key":"occupation:humanitarian","label":"humanitarian","type":"occupation"},{"key":"country:hampstead","label":"Hampstead","type":"country"},{"key":"citizenship:united kingdom","label":"United Kingdom","type":"citizenship"},{"key":"citizenship:united kingdom of great britain and ireland","label":"United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland","type":"citizenship"}],"wikidata_id":"Q460431","wikidata_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q460431","wikipedia_url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Winton"}
