He is currently a coach of Liga MX club Monterrey. Lamela began his career at River Plate, and in 2011 transferred to Roma for an initial \u20ac12 million. After two Serie A seasons, he joined Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of \u00a325.8 million, where he made over 250 appearances across eight seasons and reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League final. After stints at Sevilla, where he won the UEFA Europa League in 2023, and AEK Athens, Lamela retired from professional football in 2025.
