{"aliases":[],"awards":[],"biography_summary":"Edith Kermit Roosevelt (; August 6, 1861 \u2013 September 30, 1948) was the second wife of President Theodore Roosevelt and the first lady of the United States from 1901 to 1909. She had previously been the second lady of the United States in 1901 and the first lady of New York from 1899 to 1900. Edith Carow grew up alongside the Roosevelt family and married Theodore Roosevelt in 1886. They established a home in Sagamore Hill, where Edith had five children with Theodore, and they moved back and forth between New York and Washington, D.C., as Theodore's political career progressed over the following years. Edith became a public figure when her husband became a war hero in the Spanish\u2013American War and was elected governor of New York. Theodore became vice president in March 1901, and she became second lady of the United States for six months; she became first lady when the assassination of President William McKinley propelled Theodore to the presidency in September of that year. The exact nature of Edith's influence over Theodore's presidency is unknown, but they frequently spoke about politics and he often took her advice. She resented the press, feeling that it was intrusive. She leveraged her influence to control when and how they reported on the Roosevelts, and had professional photographs taken of the family so the press would not need to take their own. Edith also controlled Washington social life, organizing weekly meetings of the cabinet members' wives, and became the gatekeeper of who could attend formal events.","birth_date":"1861-08-06","birth_place":"Norwich","birth_place_coordinates":{"latitude":41.550278,"longitude":-72.0875},"birth_place_wikidata_id":"Q631402","birth_place_wikidata_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q631402","canonical_name":"Edith Roosevelt","canonical_url":"https://zh-cn.instaget.online/people/716e2f97f54491681ecc46d1","citizenships":["United States"],"death_date":"1948-09-30","description":"First Lady of the United States from 1901 to 1909","external_ids":{"isni":{"id":"0000000021027502","url":"https://isni.org/isni/0000000021027502"},"loc":{"id":"n79085128","url":"https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79085128.html"},"viaf":{"id":"35255319","url":"https://viaf.org/viaf/35255319/"}},"full_name":"Edith Roosevelt","height_cm":null,"names":{"aliases":["Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt","Edith Kermit Roosevelt","Edith Carow","Edith Carow Roosevelt","Edie Carow","Edie Roosevelt"],"birth":[{"language":"en","source_property":"P1477","value":"Edith Kermit Carow"}],"native":[{"language":"en","source_property":"P1559","value":"Edith Roosevelt"}],"official":[]},"native_name":null,"notable_works":[],"occupations":["politician"],"official_websites":[],"photo":null,"profile_url":"https://zh-cn.instaget.online/people/716e2f97f54491681ecc46d1","provenance":{"catalog":"wikidata_wikipedia","fetched_at":"2026-08-29T07:38:00Z","social_archives_included":false,"source_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q237590"},"public_hash":"716e2f97f54491681ecc46d1","schema_version":"1.1","socials":{},"tags":[{"key":"category:politics-and-public-service","label":"Politics and public service","type":"category"},{"key":"occupation:politician","label":"politician","type":"occupation"},{"key":"country:norwich","label":"Norwich","type":"country"},{"key":"citizenship:united states","label":"United States","type":"citizenship"}],"wikidata_id":"Q237590","wikidata_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q237590","wikipedia_url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Roosevelt"}
