As the husband and co-ruler of Queen Isabella I of Castile, he was also King of Castile from 1475 to 1504 (as Ferdinand V). He reigned jointly with Isabella over a dynastically unified Spain; together, they are known as the Catholic Monarchs. Ferdinand is considered the de facto first king of Spain, and was described as such during his reign, even though, legally, Castile and Aragon remained two separate kingdoms until they were formally united by the Nueva Planta decrees issued between 1707 and 1716. The Crown of Aragon that Ferdinand inherited in 1479 included the kingdoms of Aragon, Valencia, Mallorca, Sardinia, and Sicily, as well as the Principality of Catalonia. His marriage to Isabella is regarded as the \"cornerstone in the foundation of the Spanish monarchy\". They played a major role in the European colonization of the Americas, sponsoring the first voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492. That year, the couple defeated Granada, the last Muslim state in Western Europe, thus completing the centuries-long Reconquista. Following Isabella's death in 1504, the couple's daughter Joanna became queen of the Crown of Castile. That year, after a war with France, Ferdinand conquered the Kingdom of Naples. In 1507, he became regent of Castile on behalf of Joanna, who was alleged to be mentally unstable.","birth_date":"1452-03-10","birth_place":"Palacio de los Sada","birth_place_coordinates":{"latitude":42.494722,"longitude":-1.215556},"birth_place_wikidata_id":"Q29345592","birth_place_wikidata_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29345592","canonical_name":"Ferdinand II of Aragon","canonical_url":"https://zh-cn.instaget.online/people/02aerf41gwr","citizenships":["Crown of Aragon"],"death_date":"1516-01-23","description":"King of Aragon, Sicily, Naples, and Valencia (1452-1516)","external_ids":{"isni":{"id":"0000000122820163","url":"https://isni.org/isni/0000000122820163"},"loc":{"id":"n50002750","url":"https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n50002750.html"},"viaf":{"id":"76324947","url":"https://viaf.org/viaf/76324947/"}},"full_name":"Ferdinand II of Aragon","height_cm":null,"names":{"aliases":["Ferdinand the Catholic","Ferrando II","Ferdinand II"],"birth":[],"native":[{"language":"an","source_property":"P1559","value":"Ferrando II d'Arag\u00f3n"}],"official":[]},"native_name":null,"notable_works":[],"occupations":["ruler"],"official_websites":[],"photo":{"author":"anonymous / Unidentified painter","license":"Public domain","license_url":null,"source":"Wikimedia Commons","source_url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FerdinandIIA.jpg","url":"https://instaget-public-commons.tor1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/public/commons/ac175e58b81777cf477972018998676869e3b3480dd01aaecf316b98e03c8023"},"profile_url":"https://zh-cn.instaget.online/people/02aerf41gwr","provenance":{"catalog":"wikidata_wikipedia","fetched_at":"2026-08-29T06:57:07Z","social_archives_included":false,"source_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12860"},"public_hash":"02aerf41gwr","schema_version":"1.1","socials":{},"tags":[{"key":"occupation:ruler","label":"ruler","type":"occupation"},{"key":"country:palacio de los sada","label":"Palacio de los Sada","type":"country"},{"key":"citizenship:crown of aragon","label":"Crown of Aragon","type":"citizenship"}],"wikidata_id":"Q12860","wikidata_url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12860","wikipedia_url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_II_of_Aragon"}
